This book is about the System in which we live as citizens of Western societies and in other parts of the world; that is, the capitalist system, democracy and
the market economy.
Since the beginning of this century, numerous voices have been raised and are showing a clear discontent and great dissatisfaction with the current system and its operation in
most democratic states of the world. These manifestations of discontent and frustration, are regularly seen in the different economic, political and social forums, and
almost daily we are reminded of this by the different demonstrations and strikes by trade unions, social organizations, pensioners, doctors…
In short, many citizens and civil society in general, are starting get fed up, seeing that the system is beginning to fail and that
they are no longer receiving what it promised them.
A point of such general frustration has been reached, that many citizens are asking the
following questions:
Is another system possible? Can the current system be improved?
Would it be appropriate to make certain changes in this model?
As we suggest in the title of the book, a system cannot be considered decent when it:
Reduces its citizens to nothing more than consumers
Throws millions into unemployment
Allows 1% of the population to own 45% of global wealth
Is lazy and complacent in the face of destruction and poisoning of the
environment
Allows much of that wealth to end up in tax havens
Our intention in writing this book was to provide constructive criticism through the analysis of the different components of the system, which helps to identify the
numerous elements that we observe that do not work properly and make some proposals that can serve to improve and transform this model; because we are
convinced that another system is possible, with collaboration and commitment of all citizens to transform it into a decent and fairer system.
